George Mason Volunteers
George Mason Elementary School, in an inner city neighborhood in Richmond, has been adopted by members of First Presbyterian Church and Fourth Baptist Church. Volunteers from both congregations provide teachers and students at George Mason with a wide variety of resources aimed at enhancing the educational experience.

Men and women assist weekly in the classroom, or tutor children in grades k-2 and complete projects designed to support the staff and faculty in the older school building. Volunteers attend training in the fall and periodically throughout the year to help them understand the kind of work they may be doing with the students.

Volunteer efforts and funds from FPC's capital campaign, Faith in Action, recently allowed the transformation of an empty, seldom-used inner courtyard into a cheerful, colorful multi-use area that attracts both students and teachers. Gardeners from the Presbyterian Women helped the students plant flowers, shrubs, and trees in the area.
