  • The Beginner’s Mind (offered September 26-October 31)

The Pastor’s Class                        Fellowship Hall

“Unless you become like a little child, you can not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” This six-week class will focus on six topics at an introductory level. Sometimes we have to go back to the beginning and review the basics.

Charlie Summers will lead the class in an overview of topics like Why do we worship? Why do we read the Bible? How do we pray? What is a Presbyterian? What is the mission of Christ at FPC? What is a disciple of Jesus? There will be plenty of time for questions and conversation.

Drop-ins are welcome, whatever time they arrive. Attend just one class, or take part in all six.  Teacher: Dr. Charles Summers, pastor at FPC, has been an ordained minister for 34 years, and taught Old Testament and New Testament introduction courses at Queens University in Charlotte.

  • The Top Forty Hits of the Bible

Gen-Xers and Friends Class          Room 219

These foundational texts have engaged the imagination of generations of people and still speak to us personally and to major issues of the day. For instance, what does it mean to till and keep the earth? How do we wrestle with our past and with God? How do we understand prophecy? How does faithfulness transform the world?

Historical background and word meanings will guide us into greater understanding. We will see what issues get raised for us by each text and reflect how each scripture addresses who God is and who we are as human beings. Teacher: Dr. Rosalind Banbury is the Associate Pastor for Adult Ministries at FPC and can be bribed with dark chocolate.

  • The Top Forty Hits of the Bible

Sojourners Class                                                                          Room 205

Sojourners will join the “top forty countdown” of foundational Bible passages for our faith.  These great texts are “hits” of the Bible that every Christian would find valuable to know and understand.  We will share background on the passages and discuss how to apply the texts to our lives.  Teacher: Sandy Irby, a former school pyschologist, just graduated with a master's degree in theological studies from Union Presbyterian Seminary.

  • The Present Word:  The Inescapable God

Covenant Class     Room 218

We will be studying a series, "The Inescapable God," in The Present Word. This begins with lessons on Exodus where God moves into history through Moses and the people of Israel, forming the covenant community. Most of the term will involve a study of Psalms, the "hymnbook of the Second Temple." We will look at Psalms not only as community hymns, but also as private devotionals.  John Trotti says that this is the first time in his 42 years of teaching that he will have spent a whole semester on the Psalms--"It makes my heart sing." Come immerse yourself in wide reading in the Psalms. Teacher: Dr. Trotti, Professor Emeritus of Bibliography at Union Presbyterian Seminary, is an ordained Presbyterian minister.

  • What the Bible Says About The Great Questions of Life

Bible Explorers Class--A Bible Study for All Ages               Chapel

Does God exist? Is there life after death? Why do the righteous suffer? Is the world going to end? These and a host of other questions keep confronting us, as we live amid the ups and downs of everyday life. How do we make sense out of our world with its triumphs and tragedies? The Bible, which is God’s Word to us, deals with all of these questions. The Holy Spirit promises to bring to life that word for us. We will respond to the great questions of life through the different places where the Bible speaks of them.  Teacher: Dr. Donald Dawe is a Professor Emeritus of Systematic Theology at Union Presbyterian Seminary, author of nine books, and a frequent guest instructor at First Presbyterian.
